History
The process originated with the high laquering of leather, called Japanning. In more modern times, Seth Boyden is credited for perfecting the process of creating patent leather in 1818, thus called because the process once was patented. . Back then, a linseed coating was bonded to the leather to create a high gloass finish. Today, its typically a petroluem product that is bonded. This is not to be confused with poromeric imitation leather Poromeric Imitation Leather is what a lot of folks refer to as "patent leather" when actually it isn't. It has a high glossy finish and is a petroleum product or a vinyl. Because of the material, color can be more consistent in the manufacturing process and a greater flexibility produces every color of the rainbow and then some. The vinyl is typically backed with polyester. The first poromeric leather was released in 1964. It was easily cleanable, but stiff and not breathable, which made it ideal for structured handbags, but not so ideal for shoes. DuPont ceased producing of it in 1971. There are other patented names of glossy substitutes such as Clarino from Japan. PVC. Actually, PVC is polyvinyl chloride. Its an ingredient in what makes "PVC vinyl" but not the end product. As this is the common term in clothing and accessories and not a chemistry lesson, we will go with "PVC." PVC vinyl used in handbags, belts, and other accessories. It is much more flexible than poromerics, thus making it more versatile and more practical for some uses. It is commonly used in accessories, such as belts, trim, some handbags such as tote bags, aprons, and some raingear.

A UNIQUE large 60's handbag with an eye-catching patent HOT ROD candy apple color by "Ila". The Ila tag is missing but the oval silhouette is still there on the interior fabric. The flamboyant sculptural handle adds even more charm. The interior is lined with blue plaid fabric with a brass zippered sidewall pocket trimmed with gold metallic faux leather. There is also an open sidewall pocket. A TOTAL EYE CATCHER!

Delightfully charming petite warm brown patent oval shaped box purse by "Lewis". from the 60's. Short double handle attached to the lid by large brass rings complimenting the brushed brass metal latch. The interior is lined with brown satin with an open sidewall pocket. Resting inside the purse is a tiny mirror in a brown satin sleeve. SUCH FUN!

"Lord & Taylor", colloquially known as L&T, or LT, based in New York City, is the oldest upscale, specialty-retail department store chain in the United States. In 1861, the store was located on Broadway at Grand Street, and in 1870 they moved to a newly constructed cast-iron building at Broadway and 20th Street, in the area that became known as the "Ladies' Mile" because of all the emporia there. In 1946, Lord & Taylor became the first major store on Fifth Avenue.
This haute couture RARE quilted black patent shoulder purse is a "Lord and Taylor design from the 80's. Small cross the body style with a European length brass chain laced with black patent. The full flap lifts up to expose a black fabric lined with a tiny zippered sidewall pocket. A compact messenger style but big enough for your cell-phone and much needed necessities. A BEAUTY!

A flamboyant 60's blue and white patent "Spectator" purse. The spectator look was hot in the 60's in shoes and purses were the things to wear and carry. The back of the purse is solid blue patent and the white patent handles are long enough to slip onto your shoulder and wear snuggly under your arm. The interior is lined with dark navy blue grosgrain with an open sidewall pocket and a zippered pocket. Designed by "Risque". AWESOME RETRO!

Beguiling sleek 70's architectural high gloss black patent handbag that is a retro eye-catcher. The body flows up to the contoured flamboyant arched handles. There is an open storage compartment on each side of the middle toggle latch compartment. The interior and side pockets are lined in ribbed gold-colored taffeta. The label is no longer present but this is an "ILA" design. FANTASTIC VINTAGE!

A stunning RARE high gloss black patent oval shaped handbag by "Josef" from the 50's. The patent is gathered into a black leather wrapped frame. The patent handle is long enough to slip onto your shoulder and carry snugly under your arm. A large cube shaped crystal clear Lucite latch catches you eye. The pristine interior is lined with clack grosgrain with two open sidewall pocket. Resting in the pockets is a mirror in a black grosgrain sleeve and a matching coin purse and the original unused comb. A true time traveler that was tucked away and never uses. A PREPOSSESSING VINTAGE HANDBAG!

UNIQUE 60's Lewis black patent purse with an oval cutout on the flap trimmed root beer-colored Lucite. The purse has patent piping around there split section contour. The flap is double stitched. The wide patent strap can be adjusted to shoulder length. The interior is lined with black grosgrain with a slash pocket lined in cream-colored grosgrain. There is also a zippered sidewall pocket. Super long metallic yellow patent clutch from the 60's. When this UNIQUE clutch is carried it will surely turn heads. The interior is lined with beige faux leather and the bend of the flap has been reinforced with grosgrain ribbon. Very tiny splits are in each side where the flap bends on the backside. The photo does not due this gorgeous clutch justice. HOT RETRO!

A very UNIQUE large navy blue patent messenger style handbag from the mid-90's. A bright orange patent bow hangs from a large link gold metal chain that matches the shoulder strap. The top zipper is made of thick brass. The interior is lined with navy blue fabric with a zippered sidewall pocket and a cell phone pocket. The design brings back the 70's TWIGGY LOOK!

Chic styled patent purse by "Lou Taylor" from the 70's. Asymmetrical quilt pattern on both front and back. There is a clip on shoulder strap that converts the purse from a clutch to shoulder bag. The interior is lined with faux camel-colored leather with a zippered sidewall pocket. So many designers copied the quilted "Chanel" look. A CLASSIC BEAUTY!

On the backside there is two slight half moon manufactured process indentations.
